چکیده

The purpose of the present study was to examine 1) whether O(2) uptake (VO(2)) oscillates during light exercise and 2) whether the oscillation is enhanced after impulse exercise. After resting for 1 min on a bicycle seat, subjects performed 5-min pre-exercise with 25 watts work load, 10-s impulse exercise with 200 watts work load and 15-min post exercise with 25 watts work load at 80 rpm. VO(2) during pre-exercise significantly increased during impulse exercise and suddenly decreased and re-increased until 23 s after impulse exercise. In the cross correlation between heart rate (HR) and VO(2) after impulse exercise, VO(2) strongly correlated to HR with a time delay of -4 s. Peak of power spectral density (PSD) in HR appeared at 0.0039 Hz and peak of PSD in VO(2) appeared at 0.019 Hz. The peak of the cross power spectrum between VO(2) and HR appeared at 0.0078 Hz. The results suggested that there is an oscillation in O(2) uptake during light exercise that is associated with the oscillation in O(2) consumption in active muscle. The oscillation is enhanced not only by change in O(2) consumption but also by O(2) content transported from active muscle to the lungs.

Effect of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation on O2 Uptake Kinetics and Time to Exhaustion in Trained Women

Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Branched-Chain Amino Acid (BCAA) supplementation on O2 uptake kinetics and the time to exhaustion in trained women.  Methods In this quasi-experimental study with pre-test/post-test design, participants were 20 trained women (Mean±SD age, 21.3±0.5 years). They were randomly assigned into two groups of BCAA (received 45mg/kg/d BCA...

Does oxygen delivery explain interindividual variation in forearm critical impulse?

Within individuals, critical power appears sensitive to manipulations in O2 delivery. We asked whether interindividual differences in forearm O2 delivery might account for a majority of the interindividual differences in forearm critical force impulse (critical impulse), the force analog of critical power. Ten healthy men (24.6 ± 7.10 years) completed a maximal effort rhythmic handgrip exercise...

Enhanced pyruvate dehydrogenase activity does not affect muscle O2 uptake at onset of intense exercise in humans.

It has been proposed that the activation state of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) may influence the rate of skeletal muscle O2 uptake during the initial phase of exercise; however, this has not been directly tested in humans. To remedy this, we used dichloroacetate (DCA) infusion to increase the active form of PDH (PDH(a)) and, subsequently, measured leg O2 uptake and markers of anaerobic ATP prov...

A validated model of oxygen uptake and circulatory dynamic interactions at exercise onset in humans.

At the onset of muscular exercise, the kinetics of pulmonary O2 uptake (Vo2P) reflect the integrated dynamic responses of the ventilatory, circulatory, and neuromuscular systems for O2 transport and utilization. Muscle O2 uptake (Vo2m) kinetics, however, are dissociated from Vo2P kinetics by intervening O2 capacitances and the dynamics of the circulation and ventilation. We developed a multicom...

It's all in the gills: evaluation of O2 uptake in Pacific hagfish refutes a major respiratory role for the skin.

Hagfish skin has been reported as an important site for ammonia excretion and as the major site of systemic oxygen acquisition. However, whether cutaneous O2 uptake is the dominant route of uptake remains under debate; all evidence supporting this hypothesis has been derived using indirect measurements. Here, we used partitioned chambers and direct measurements of oxygen consumption and ammonia...
